Light Tangles
What this feels like to your dog:
Light tangles are small knots sitting mostly on the surface of the coat.
For your dog this feels like:
- Mild pulling when brushed.
- Slight tugging when they move or lay down.
These types of tangles typically need:
- Gentle brushing and checking with a metal comb.
- Extra time and care to keep it stress and pain free.
- No at home baths until tangle free.
- Regularly scheduled grooms or drop in brushing.
Moderate Matting
What this feels like to your dog:
Moderate matting means the tangles have tightened and are starting to pull at the skin. For us it is like having our hair in a tight pony-tail for a long period of time.
For your dog this feels like:
- Constant tugging when moving, sitting or lying down.
- Increased skin sensitivity
- Discomfort when brushed or even touched in
those areas - Restricted airflow to the skin, which can trap moisture and debris.
- At this stage, matting is no longer just a cosmetic issue- it begins to affect comfort.
These types of tangles typically need:
- A short length to relieve tension on skin
- Extra grooming time and breaks as needed
- No getting wet until completely matting free
Severe Matting
What this feels like to your dog:
Moderate matting means the tangles have tightened and are starting to pull at the skin. For us it is like having our hair in a tight pony-tail for a long period of time.
For your dog this feels like:
- Continuous pulling on the skin
Pain when moving or being touched - Trapped moisture that can cause irritation or sores
- Reduced circulation and skin sensitivity
- At this stage matting can be very painful and may hide underlying skin issues.
These types of tangles typically need:
- A short length to release the mats safely
- Extra caution around these ares
- A gentle bath AFTER matt removal

Matting FAQ
Can you brush out mats instead of shaving?
Sometimes- but only if it can be done safely and comfortably for your dog. If brushing causes pain, stress or skin irritation, shaving is the kinder option.
Will my dog look “bald” if shaved?
Not bald- just short and clean. Shaving gives the coat a fresh start and allows the skin to heal. Hair grows back, often healthier with a proper maintenance plan.
Does shaving hurt my dog?
No. Shaving relieves discomfort caused by pulling and tight mats. Many dogs visibly relax once the mats are removed.
How can I prevent matting in the future?
We’ll work with you to find a grooming schedule tailored to your dog’s coat length and share brushing recommendations specific to their coat type.

Why does matting happen even if I brush?

- Moisture-baths, rain, swimming
- Friction- collars, harnesses, laying down
- Fine or curly coat textures and
- Skipping professional grooming to long
*Surface brushing does not always reach the areas where the matting starts.
